What is PRP hair therapy?

PRP treatment is a non-surgical medical procedure where concentrated plasma rich in growth factor and nutrients are injected into parts of your scalp that require stimulation to grow hair.

PRP is short for platelet rich plasma. PRP is derived from your own blood and contains growth factors that stimulate healing and regeneration in the body. The body uses this natural substance to heal and regenerate itself. In the medical field, PRP has been successfully used for years to help heal wounds and regenerate tissues. In the field of aesthetic medicine, PRP is used to help regenerate healthy, beautiful skin, and more recently, as a breakthrough technology to restore the growth of healthy hair.

PRP stimulates hair follicle function, reversing the loss of hair and helping to strengthen and activate the hair follicles’ growth of thicker, healthier hair. When PRP is applied to the areas of the scalp to the balding areas where the hair follicles have weakened or stopped growing hair, it triggers the cells to function again and produce stronger hair strands.

It is, however, extremely important that you go to an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon to receive your treatment, rather than shop around for the cheapest price.

Why leave your health and your face in the hands of amateurs? The old adage is still true: “You get what you pay for and, if it sounds too good to be true…it probably is.”

What Should I Expect During a PRP Hair Therapy Treatment?

PRP hair restoration begins with drawing a small amount of blood from your arm. This blood is spun in a centrifuge to separate out the PRP.

A mild anesthetic will be applied to your scalp to ensure you’re comfortable. Once this has taken effect, we will inject the PRP with a small needle into the target areas of your scalp.

The procedure will be complete in less than one hour. Expect some redness or swelling at the injection site, and you may experience mild soreness. This with fade within a couple of days.

Results After PRP Hair Restoration

As the hair follicle reactivate and grow stronger over about one month’s time, you will begin to see an improvement in the thickness and quality of your hair. To achieve ideal results, we recommend three sessions, each spaced one month apart. This allows the PRP to stimulate all of the hair follicles during their potential growth stage.

After three months, you should see a dramatic improvement in the overall thickness of the hair where PRP was applied.

PRP Hair Restoration FAQs

How many PRP hair restoration sessions will I need to maintain results?

After the initial series of three monthly sessions, many patients return for maintenance treatments every four to six months to help sustain follicle activity and hair thickness over time.

Can PRP hair restoration be combined with other hair loss treatments?

Yes. PRP is often used alongside topical treatments or other hair restoration approaches to help maximize results. The team can discuss a combined plan based on your goals.

How much does PRP hair restoration cost?

Cost depends on the number of sessions recommended for your specific pattern of hair loss. The team will provide pricing details during your consultation.

Is PRP hair restoration permanent?

Results are not permanent, since hair loss is an ongoing process influenced by genetics, hormones, and aging. Periodic maintenance sessions help sustain the improvement in hair thickness over time.

Is there an age limit for PRP hair restoration?

There is no strict upper age limit. Dr. Poulos evaluates each patient's scalp and follicle activity individually to determine whether PRP is likely to be effective.

What should I avoid before a PRP hair restoration appointment?

Patients are generally advised to avoid blood-thinning medications, alcohol, and anti-inflammatory supplements in the day or two before treatment to support optimal results. The team will provide specific pre-appointment guidance.

Will PRP hair restoration change my hair color or texture?

No. PRP works by stimulating your existing follicles to produce stronger, thicker strands, so your natural hair color and texture remain the same.
